Sam Altman's high-profile firing has drawn comparisons to Timnit Gebru's exit from Google. Some tech observers and "Black Twitter" asked: "What if Sam Altman were a Black woman?" Sam Altman's shocking ouster— and reinstatement — to OpenAI drew comparisons to Steve Jobs's exit and eventual return to Apple . But a less obvious comparison has been drawn that asks the question: "What if Sam Altman was a Black Woman?" Advertisement"What If Sam Altman Were A Black Woman?

And because of what he now knows about football injuries, NFL players don’t seem so superhuman anymore. And as another NFL season kicks off this week, these questions haven’t gone away. Long-term degenerative brain diseases such as CTE and Parkinson’s have become huge concerns for football players and their families. “This is one reason why NFL fans can cheer for the most violent-looking tackles imaginable – because they are allowed in the game. “Football fans are like, ‘I love the physicality, but I’m certainly not going to put my child into that,” Wann says.

Jeff Kowalsky | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesA string of Google executives have changed their roles in the span of several months, in a shift that has sidelined many of company's remaining old guard. The changes encompass high-profile executives such as CFO Ruth Porat, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, and employee No. Some say they have left their roles for a new challenge and others have left to seek opportunities in AI. While she'll still be in an advisory role at Google, she said, she wanted to "start a new chapter." Google's AI head, Jeff Dean, who's been at Google since 1999, became a chief scientist as part of the change.

In April, Google made a dramatic move to face down the threat from Microsoft and OpenAI: it combined its AI research team, Brain, with DeepMind. By fusing it with its central AI unit, Google sent an unambiguous message that it was pulling out all the stops to supercharge its work in AI. Insider obtained internal org charts that reveal the new power structure of Google DeepMind. Hassabis oversees around 2,450 full-time employees, the majority of which are Google DeepMind employees. Dean, who previously oversaw all of Google's AI unit, has moved from his management position into the new role of Chief Scientist, reporting directly to CEO Sundar Pichai.

Google told staff it will be more selective about the research it publishes. Recently, information like code and data has become accessible on a "much more on a need-to-know" basis, according to a Google AI staffer. LaMDA, a chatbot technology that forms the basis of Bard, was originally built as a 20 percent project within Google Brain. (The company has historically allowed employees to spend 20% of their working days exploring side projects that might turn into full-fledged Google products.) Google's AI division has faced other setbacks.
[1/2] Artificial intelligence pioneer Geoffrey Hinton speaks at the Thomson Reuters Financial and Risk Summit in Toronto, December 4, 2017. REUTERS/Mark BlinchMay 2 (Reuters) - A pioneer of artificial intelligence said he quit Google (GOOGL.O) to speak freely about the technology's dangers, after realising that computers could become smarter than people far sooner than he and other experts had expected. "I left so that I could talk about the dangers of AI without considering how this impacts Google," Geoffrey Hinton wrote on Twitter. “The idea that this stuff could actually get smarter than people — a few people believed that,” he told the New York Times. In his tweet, Hinton said Google itself had "acted very responsibly" and denied that he had quit so that he could criticise his former employer.
Geoffrey Hinton quit his job at Google and told The New York Times he regrets his role in pioneering AI. Hinton said he quit so he could warn about the risks of AI without worrying about the impact to Google. After recently leaving behind his decade-long career at Google, Geoffrey Hinton, nicknamed "the Godfather of AI," told The New York Times he has regrets around the foundational role he played in developing the technology. After Google employees were tasked with testing the Bard chatbot, some employees said they thought the technology could be dangerous, as reported by Bloomberg. This is a concern that CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman, and other critics of the AI technology, have echoed.
He worked part-time at Google for a decade on the tech giant’s AI development efforts, but he has since come to have concerns about the technology and his role in advancing it. In a tweet Monday, Hinton said he left Google so he could speak freely about the risks of AI, rather than because of a desire to criticize Google specifically. “I left so that I could talk about the dangers of AI without considering how this impacts Google,” Hinton said in a tweet. OpenAI, Microsoft and Google are at the forefront of this trend, but IBM, Amazon, Baidu and Tencent are working on similar technologies. Obviously, I no longer think that.”Even before stepping aside from Google, Hinton had spoken publicly about AI’s potential to do harm as well as good.
Jeff Dean, head of artificial intelligence at Google LLC, speaks during a Google AI event in San Francisco, California, U.S., on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020. The two divisions, DeepMind and Google Research, have also reportedly had tensions in the past, leading DeepMind to seek more independence. This group, called Google DeepMind, will bring together part of Google Research (the Brainteam) and DeepMind. Google DeepMind will operate as a nimble, fast-paced unit, with clear points of connection andcollaboration with Google Research and the PAs. Working closely with Jeff as ChiefScientist, Google Research will continue its focus on fundamental and applied research across abroad portfolio.
Legal generative AI startup Harvey has raised a funding round from Sequoia, Insider has learned. This funding round landed the startup a $150 million post-money valuation. Industry-specific generative AI startups have emerged in nearly every industry, from healthcare to gaming, to offer specialized services beyond the capabilities of general models like OpenAI's GPT-4. Legal generative AI startup Harvey has raised a Series A round of funding at a $150 million post-money valuation from Sequoia Capital, according to three people with knowledge of the financing who were not authorized to speak publicly. The relatively few customers makes Harvey's valuation seem rich in comparison, the source said, pointing to a broader trend of elevated valuations and round sizes in the hyped-up generative AI space.
Central to those efforts is its Research and AI group, led by senior vice president Jeff Dean. An internal org chart seen by Insider shows the 14 other leaders under Dean who drive Google's efforts to catch the sudden success of OpenAI. Jeff Dean, senior vice president, Google AI Thomas Samson/Getty ImagesReporting directly to Dean is Eli Collins, a VP leading work on Google's ChatGPT competitor, Bard. Collins also works on AI Test Kitchen, an app that gives select users access to some of Google's latest AI demos. Jay Yagnik, VP of research, oversees the biggest number of employees within Dean's organization.
In the lead up to the Bard announcement, Google executives repeatedly said the technology it was developing internally would integrate with search. “We’re working to bring these latest AI advancements into our products, starting with Search,” the company said in a blog post. That same week, at an event in Paris, Google search boss Prabhakar Raghavan unveiled some fresh examples of using Bard within search. "You see the stories of ChatGPT coincides with an event that we’re having that was actually focused on search," Krawczyk said. Specifically, the question asked why Google lost so many key people who were listed on a paper about much of the AI technology behind Bard.

CEO of Alphabet and Google Sundar Pichai during press conference at the Chancellery in Warsaw, Poland on March 29, 2022. They included a chatbot called "Apprentice Bard," as well as new search desktop designs that could be used in a question-and-answer format. Google on Monday announced an artificial intelligence chatbot technology called " Bard " that the company will begin rolling out in the coming weeks. Bard will compete directly with rival ChatGPT , an AI service created by OpenAI. Google's prime business is web search, and the company has long touted itself as a pioneer in AI.
Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai said Thursday that the company will soon add advanced AI features to its search engine. Pichai said that it will release the large language model "in the coming weeks and months" so the company can get more feedback. Weakness in the advertising business appeared in an 8% revenue decline in YouTube's advertising revenue and a 2% fall in Google's Search and Other revenue. Google's prime business is web search, and the company has long touted itself as a pioneer in AI. But generative AI products like ChatGPT could pose a threat to the entire model of internet search, as they can provide creative answers to more complicated queries.
Google is also testing a chatbot called “Apprentice Bard,” where employees can ask questions and receive detailed answers similar to ChatGPT. Apprentice BardOne of the test products is a chatbot called Apprentice Bard, which uses Google’s conversation technology LaMDA, or Language Model for Dialogue Applications. Apprentice Bard looks similar to ChatGPT: Employees can enter a question in a dialog box and get a text answer, then give feedback on the response. Apprentice Bard replaced Meena, a previous version of a smart chat bot that had launched internally but was later discontinued. In one example circulated internally, a tester asked Apprentice Bard if there will be another round of layoffs at Google.
A Google search executive who spoke to Insider on background said he definitely wasn't worried about the threat from ChatGPT. "What's unnerving is it looks as good and confident when it's wrong and when it's right," said Daniel Tunkelang, a search consultant and former employee on Google's search team. Google search is, of course, not immune to misinformation, and regularly surfaces links to pages that contain inaccuracies. But unlike Google search, which links to sources for information when it answers a question, an LLM runs into major problems there. Even in that situation, Google's search results would be well positioned.
Either way, I wanted to see how well the chatbot would work as an alternative to Google's search engine. Instead of Googling my questions throughout the day, I asked ChatGPT. I normally would have asked Google what to do. Instead, I asked ChatGPT. On the other hand, there are also potential limitations to using ChatGPT as a search engine.
Employees asked execs if failing to launch a chatbot like OpenAI's ChatGPT is a "missed opportunity," CNBC reported. Alphabet's CEO and Google's head of AI said the company has a greater "reputational risk" than startups like OpenAI. ChatGPT reached over one million users within five days of its launch, and is backed by Google's rival, Microsoft. In addition to LaMDA, Google's BERT and MUM AI language models, which are used to improve its search engine, are competitive with ChatGPT. A former Google executive told Bloomberg that ChatGPT could "disrupt" Google's ad business by stopping users from clicking links that have ads.
